FAQ

Where is your office?

I currently provide all of my services via teletherapy. As long as you live in California or New York, we can work together.

Before our session, I’ll send you a link to connect to a secure platform. You can connect using your smartphone or computer.

How long are sessions?
Sessions are 45 minutes.
Do you take insurance?

I do not accept insurance. If you have out-of-network benefits, I can provide you with a Superbill to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. If you have any questions about your out-of-network mental health benefits, please contact your insurance company directly.

What is your cancellation policy?

Sessions not canceled at least 24 hours before your scheduled appointment will be charged the full session fee (unless we can reschedule another time to meet that same week).

I know life can get hectic and things come up, but I keep this policy because I have reserved that hour in my schedule specifically for you.

How do I pay?
I will charge your credit card using a secure, confidential, HIPAA-compliant mobile app.
Do you prescribe medications?

I do not. However, I can help you find a psychiatrist or provider who does.

What is therapy like?
Therapy is a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can openly and honestly discuss anything. I do my best to create a comfortable, accepting space where nothing is off-limits. I am open to hearing it all.
How long will I be in therapy?
There is no specific time frame for therapy. It can vary anywhere from a few months to a few years. The process is different for every person.
Are you LGBTQIA+ friendly?
Absolutely! I enjoy supporting people of all identities.
Do you work with people from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions?
Again, absolutely! Everyone is welcome in my practice.
How do I prepare for our online session?
Please find a private, quiet space with good Wi-Fi. Turn off all other devices, including cell phones. And for your safety, please avoid driving during our session time.
How do I know if you are the right therapist for me?
Finding a therapist is a lot like dating. It’s important that you feel comfortable – like your therapist “gets” you. It may take a few sessions to feel totally at ease, but if something feels really off, I encourage you to trust yourself and keeping looking. Please also feel free to let me know your concerns so we can navigate them together.
How do I schedule an appointment?

Just fill out the Contact form at the bottom of the page or email me at dr.emily.polak@gmail.com.

We’ll start with a free 20-minute consultation to discuss your needs and see if we are a good match to work together.

Do you know any therapy jokes?

Definitely…

Why did the email go to therapy?

Because it had attachment issues.

What did the therapist say when a client asked, “Can you validate my parking?”

“Excellent job parking… REALLY nicely done.”
